Itinerary
Day 1 Lisbon - Evora - 0
Arriving to Lisbon Airport the transfer will take an hour to Évora. Check in at the hotel and pick up the appropriate equipment; boots, pants, helmets ...
Dinner is scheduled in a nice restaurant inside the ancient walls and you can enjoy a walk by lovely city of Évora, World Heritage by Unesco.
Day 2 Lousal - 216
Breakfast at 8.00 and briefing to explain you how to use the GPS, safety rules and other important details about the day stage. Leaving Évora towards north you`ll get wide lanes between fences of the Alentejo farms until you reach the Divor`s dam and a few more kms you`ll see in the top of the hill the XIII century castle of Arraiolos. Soon after we cross Ravasqueira`s vineyards just before we get to Ciborro, a litlle village plantted in the midle of nowhere. Turning southwest on typical tracks of this region you`ll slalow the cork oak trees and cross ahead a sandy bottom river before having lunch in Vendas Novas.
After lunch again wide lanes in sections sometimes sandy but firm. Refueling in Alcácer do Sal, then get in sandy tracks, a section to the try your skills, followed by bumpy tracks until the arrival to Lousal mines. The ruins worth visiting.
Day 3 Lousal - Portimão - 203
It is the longest stage of the expedition. Connecting Ermidas do Sado for refueling, and then go on sandy and great driving enjoyment tracks. Long bumpy tracks to Cercal and soon after more technical and physically demading tracks on S. Luís Montains, followed by a section of the Rota Vicentina and the visit to "Pego das Pias" where took place the shots for "The House of the Spirits", already close Odemira, our lunch spot.
In the afternoon, more sinuous sections in the mountains heading the Atlantic Ocean with beautifull views over Odeceixe, a piscatory village. Tight sections again on Monchique Montains where you can see a large section of Algarve beaches and a few more kilometers we`ll arrive to the welcomming Golf Resort where we will be staying.
Day 4 Portimão - Alcoutim - 194
This is the most technical day of the tour. We begin with the magnificent views over the large expanses of water of the Arade and Funcho Dams as we follow them on a twisty track parallel to the water - sharp turnings left and right!
Today we will cross the entire Algarve from west to east, in the mountains, on very technical and fun tracks twisting through the beautiful forests. Just before lunch we have a tough hill climb but the photos at the end are worth the work! (There is an alternative track for those who don’t fancy doing this section.) We reach our refuel point and then have a well-deserved lunch in a local village restaurant.
In the afternoon a further 90 twisty kilometers in the mountains, on tracks through forests and crossing streams. The last few kms on asphalt to our accommodation in a country house hotel. Dinner in the hotel.
Day 5 Alcoutim - Moura - 183
Time to head north. After breakfast we start the day on winding tracks that appear to have been unused and forgotten for many years. Some great, fun riding including crossing several river beds. Watch out, rolling rounded stones! As we move up north we leave the mountains behind and the scenery flattens out. An awesome track hugging the wide Guadiana river delivers us to Mértola where we will have lunch.
In the afternoon we will visit the "Pulo do Lobo" (jump of the wolf) which is a point where the wide Guadiana river gets very narrow. It gets its name from an ancient saying that wolves would jump from one side to the other. Beautiful scenery; an ideal place for photos with dramatic fast running water. We return to wide, fast tracks lined by fences that takes us to Albernoa where we will be stopping this night in a different style of country hotel. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 6 Moura - Evora - 213
The stage begins with large fast tracks up to the very little village of Cabeça Gorda. We`ll cross Guadian River close to Serpa and time to drink the mythic fresh beer at "Lebrinha", followed by Pias and Moura, already very close to the Alqueva, the Europe`s biggest articial lake. At Mourão the lunch will be served at "Adega Velha" (Old Cellar) where you`ll have a spontaneous performence of Alentejo`s rural singuers.
In the afternoon, the mediavel village of Monsaraz with an unforgetable view over the Lake!! Refueling in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Europe`s Wine Capital for one last wavy section near the Monte Novo Dam, as well near Evora, where we return after 5 days.
